After lunch well leave the bustle of central Beijing for the northwestern outskirts of the city and the exquisite Summer Palace. More than a single building, the Summer Palace is actually an enormous park where the Emperor and his entourage retreated to escape the summer heat of the city. With its magnificent pavilions, towers and pagodas, peaceful lakes and enchanting landscape, it is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it is the most splendid classical garden in China. |
 |
| Day 4 (Sat) Beijing B, L, D |
| Well take a full-day excursion into the countryside to visit one of the Wonders of the World - The Great Wall of China. An astounding architectural and engineering achievement, construction of the Great Wall began more than 2000 years ago. Today it snakes across approximately 4000 miles of Chinas rugged interior. We will visit the Badaling section, 45 miles north of Beijing. Built during the Ming Dynasty, Badaling is the best preserved section of the Wall. It includes several platforms and watchtowers and is wide enough to accommodate 10 men marching abreast. The views of the surrounding mountains and passes are breathtaking. On our way back to town we will stop at the Ming Dynasty Tombs, the final resting place of 13 emperors. We will walk along the Spirit Way, a sacred path guarded by stone statues of animals, mythical beasts and Imperial officials. We will also visit the Ding Tomb, the burial site of the emperor Wanli and his 2 empresses, the only tomb that has been excavated. We will return to Beijing in time for dinner. |
